[00:04.35] Inspirations comes in many forms, and for Nirvana, - ST THOMAS
[00:08.00] it came in the form of an obscure Scottish band called the Vaselines. - ST THOMAS
[00:13.05] Kurt and I were totally into the Vaselines, - KRIST
[00:15.44] I mean they were my favorite band, - KRIST
[00:16.75] they still are one of my favorite bands. - KRIST
[00:18.50] Definitely our number one favorite band. - KURT
[00:21.34] We finally got to play with them, they reformed to play with us, - KRIST
[00:24.90] when we played Edinburgh, Scotland, in ah, early winter of 1990. - KRIST
[00:29.30] So we met Eugene, and kinda kept a rap going with them- KRIST
[00:32.65] then we heard Captain America the band,- KRIST
[00:34.54] we heard the tape, we were totally blown away.- KRIST
[00:36.14] Yeah, that's his new band, Captain America, they're really good. - KURT
[00:39.39] Eugene's a great songwriter, so, yeah! - KRIST
[00:41.24] Captain America's gotta go on tour with us! - KRIST

[01:03.00] Since our record has done so well, - KRIST
[01:05.65] we can open up doors for other bands, - KRIST
[01:08.10] from where we come from, - KRIST
[01:09.99] like Sonic Youth or Mudhoney, or the Melvins, - KRIST
[01:12.60] or L7, or Dinosaur Jr. I can just go on and on and on and on. - KRIST
[01:16.99] I guess the best part would be, - KURT
[01:19.94] being in the position to take other bands, - KURT
[01:22.85] whom you like a lot, on tour with you. - KURT
[01:25.94] It's definitely a nice thing to be able to do. - KURT
[01:29.49] We took Shonen Knife, a three piece all girl Japanese band - KURT
[01:34.84] on tour with us in England, - KURT
[01:36.80] and they've been a favorite of ours for years, - KURT
[01:39.15] and no one really knows who they are in England, or anywhere in Europe. - KURT
[01:42.29] And we've taken the Melvins on tour with us, - KURT
[01:44.85] and in the future, we hope to take Hole, and Jesus Lizard, - KURT
[01:49.34] and a bunch of other bands who we like. - KURT

[02:05.63] People think that the 'rock star life' is so exciting and it's, - KURT
[02:10.33] y'know you play a show, - KURT
[02:12.74] you usually get into the town by the time it's dark, - KURT
[02:15.98] and you sound check, and you don't get to see the city, - KURT
[02:18.83] you play the show and then you leave the next morning. - KURT
[02:21.24] Y'know, you go to the hotel room, and you leave, - KURT
[02:23.99] and do the same thing over and over again. - KURT
[02:25.98] It's kinda boring in a way, I mean still I can't think of anything else I'd rather do, - KURT
[02:31.54] but it's not as exciting as everyone thinks. - KURT
[02:34.74] But it's getting harder for me to jump out of the audience now, - KURT
[02:37.89] because the crowds are bigger and some of the people don't realize that. - KURT
[02:43.38] I don't know what they realize actually, - KURT
[02:45.34] because they're putting their hands in my pockets and - KURT
[02:47.94] trying to steal my money and my wallet, - KURT
[02:50.24] and they're they're hitting me really hard and scratching me, so it's ... - KURT
[02:56.29] I dunno, after a while I'm probably not going to be able to do that anymore. - KURT
[02:59.04] And that's too bad, cause' it's a fun little bonding thing to do with the audience. - KURT

[05:30.12] I think we had our shot at doing the ah, big studio, high-tech Hollywood thing, - DAVE
[05:34.61] whatever y'know I mean, that studio to us, was like, pretty like, techno. - DAVE
[05:39.77] I dunno, maybe we'll do the next record on 8-track. - DAVE
[05:42.46] That will be recorded on 8-track. - KURT
[05:44.32] You can get more low end frequencies out of an 8-track. - DAVE

[05:53.52] I dunno, I felt kinda weird straying so far away from it ... - KURT

[05:58.62] There's definitely going to be some more abrasive songs on our next record. - KURT
[06:01.57] Y'know, we're gonna do something, just totally test the limits. - DAVE
[06:05.22] Really raw and abrasive, to very uh, pretty and candyish. - KRIST
[06:09.67] All the radio listeners, or the MTV watchers, or whoever, just like, really test them, - DAVE
[06:14.66] and shove something totally aggro, in their face, and, - DAVE
[06:17.98] and see if they can handle that. - DAVE

[06:44.00] Almost anything that's musical, is pop music, as far as I'm concerned. - KURT
[06:49.14] As long as it's good, and it's catchy, it's pop. And y'know, a lot of punk rock is pop. - KURT

[06:58.29] was when hardcore came around, y'know, and there was a lot, - KURT
[07:02.50] y'know, real dirgy stuff also, - KURT
[07:05.79] like the crossover metal thing, and I really can't consider a lot of that music. - KURT
[07:10.69] Y'know, maybe one percent, of the people who are listening to Nevermind, - DAVE
[07:14.94] that ever bought Nevermind, maybe not one percent, - DAVE
[07:17.15] but I'm just saying that this, um, a small minority of people - DAVE
[07:19.79] who are listening to our record now, know about punk rock. - DAVE
[07:23.33] A lot of people don't know about punk rock. - DAVE
[07:25.02] They think about punk rock ... - DAVE
[07:26.23] and they think of like that Quincy episode where the guy threw the brick off the building. - DAVE
[07:30.02] I guess, I dunno, I just don't agree with old punk rock ethos, - KURT
[07:34.32] of like, you have to starve to be a real artist. It's ********. - KURT

[07:56.60] because y'know, you tend to become too anal, and it becomes ridiculous, - KURT
[08:01.60] If you shove it down people's throats y'know, - KURT

[08:05.80] and I think the songs kinda reflect that. - KURT
[08:07.96] It's just another issue, another topic, like we could talk about racism, - KRIST
[08:10.96] we could talk about feminism, nationalism, I don't really subscribe to that way of thought, at all. - KRIST
[08:17.60] There's just so much corruption going on with the government, - KURT
[08:20.86] and the Reagan years have definitely set us back, - KURT
[08:24.55] to where the average teenager feels kinda lost, and there isn't much hope. - KURT
[08:29.80] They're still at least, aware of the mistakes that our parent's generation has made. - KURT
[08:36.30] And I just think that it'll take a little bit of time for kids to start doing the duties - KURT
[08:41.31] that they're supposed to do, which is challenge things, like corruption. - KURT
[08:45.55] "The way American's money is budgeted by our government, - DAVE
[08:48.55] it leaves nothing to the education system. - DAVE
[08:51.30] Teachers are dealing with the future, y'know, - DAVE
[08:54.10] teachers are dealing with kids growing up, who are gonna take care of me or you, someday. - DAVE
[09:01.35] Just the education system in general, in a lot of places, is really screwed. - DAVE
[09:06.56] Y'know, it's great to get information like that, so you can um, form your own ideas. - KRIST
[09:10.35] It'd be neat, if like y'know, the 60's had a like, Abby Hoffman, - KRIST
[09:15.45] or ah, John Sinclair y'know, Timothy Leary to an extent. - KRIST
[09:19.60] And they were spokes people, and they were shaking things up, - KRIST
[09:22.70] and nowadays, there's not really anybody. - KRIST

[11:48.91] Since it's release, the album has topped the billboard charts, - ST THOMAS
[11:52.27] and the first single Smells Like Teen Spirit has become a top-ten hit. - ST THOMAS
[11:56.56] The success of Nevermind has taken a lot of people by surprise including the band. - ST THOMAS
[12:01.50] I'll never get over the shock and that's kinda good. - KURT
[12:04.17] It was, um, sort of a really, whatever, organic thing, there wasn't any massive hype. - DAVE
[12:10.92] I mean there is definitely no big million dollar investment, in, - KURT
[12:14.67] in promotion behind this record at all, it's totally organic, and it just happened. - KURT
[12:19.26] Y'know, whatever's happened, is, was surely out of our control, - KRIST
[12:22.41] and I'm glad it's happened y'know it's nice to sell that many records, - KRIST
[12:25.56] it's nice to turn on people to something different. - KRIST
[12:28.11] People tellin' me "Oh yeah you guy's record", "I think you guys are gonna go platinum", - KRIST
[12:32.10] and we're like "Oh man, c'mon, y'know, if we get a gold record outta this, that'll be amazing". - KRIST
[12:36.97] It's not my fault. I never wanted the fame involved. - KURT
[12:40.82] That's, That's a totally different story. - KURT
[12:43.31] I think Paul Stanley once said something like, - KURT
[12:46.45] "Only thing that money gives you is relief of not having to worry about money." - KURT
[12:50.91] Only thing I'd really like to do with it, is to invest in some bands that I like, - KURT
[12:55.02] I, I don't wanna start my own record label cause God, - KURT
[12:58.76] I know I couldn't do that. - KURT
[13:01.46] But I'd like to give some money to some labels who're putting out great music, help in that way. - KURT
[13:08.27] And um, probably gonna buy a house. - KURT
[13:09.75] Hopefully we can have a recording studio too a little 8-track recording studio, - KURT
[13:14.01] so we can make good demos. - KURT
[13:16.70] And those are pretty much the plans and just get some new shoes. - KURT
